Hopper passed away at his Los Angeles home, surrounded by family and friends.
His screen career spanned more than 50 years, including roles in Rebel Without a Cause and Giant in the 1950s; Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet and mainstream blockbuster Speed.
Hopper's most acclaimed work was the 1969 cult classic Easy Rider, which he also directed and co-wrote with Peter Fonda and Terry Southern.
